This post is going to cover the importance of preparing your cover letter and your resume for traveling nurse agencies. If you plan to apply online or offline, you still have to have a resume. Many times it is the first thing an employer will see before they decide whether or not they want to hire you.
The first thing that a traveling nurse agency is going to look at is your cover letter. This letter is going to go into some detail of what your training and experience is, but you will leave most of this list for your resume.
I just helped my sis in law the other day with her resume and cover letter. It was okay, but really needed some help. She is not a nurse, but she is a physician’s assistant, and she said she had already submitted the one we had looked at to a couple of places and still had not received any call.
There were a couple major things that I helped her with. First, she had no cover letter, just a resume. A cover letter is extremely important. It shows you have knowledge about the company you would like to work with (and if you do not know much about the company, then how do you know you want to work for it?) A cover letter can let your personality shine through, and will let traveling nurse agencies know whether you will be a right fit with them or not. A cover letter lets the nursing agency also know that you are not just sending your resume out in masses hoping to get a hit, but that you are truly interested in thier agency and can bring some special skills that the agency could put to use.
The second problem with my sister-in-law’s resume was its organization and presentation. She definitely has some awesome education, experience and skills; however, she listed them all out. It was a few pages long and nothing really stood out. While some traveling nurse agencies will have no problem with sorting out qualified nursing candidates to interview, most others will toss the ones that are hard to read to the bottom of the stack. Organization and presentation is key to getting your resume noticed and sorted to the TOP of the pile!
So, we worked on the two items, her resume and cover letter, and then she applied to another medical center. Within two weeks she had an interview, and later a job offer. Two places to check out for cover letter and resume help are Amazing Cover Letters and Amazing Resumes. You CAN get a job with a traveling nurse agency. An excellent cover letter and resume will help!
