in Schools for Nursing

There are many things to consider when you need to determine the best nursing schools to assure you get the training you need to start your career in nursing.  You need to look at the programs offered, the degrees offered and the cost of the program as well as other factors such as the length of time the program takes.  You can also consider rankings when you need to find the top nursing schools in the country if you have the resources to attend one of the top ranked schools.

Getting the Right Degree
There are many ways to start a career in nursing.  However, you need the right credentials no matter what path you take.  All degree programs will require you to have a high school diploma and you will also need to have taken the right classes.  However, you may need to look into different programs for associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.  Not only will this affect what type of career you will have but also the length of time it takes to complete your program.

For instance, you only need an associate’s degree if you want to be a licensed practitioner nurse.  However, you will need either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree if you want to be an RN.  If you want to go into an administrative position, you will need to get into a graduate program for a master’s or doctorate degree.  Of course, each of these paths vary in the amount of time it takes with the graduate programs taking the longest.

Choosing the Right Kind of School
You may also have to make certain concessions in regards to the kind of school you choose to attend.  If you are on a budget, you will most likely have to attend a community college.  You are most likely to get an associate’s degree from a community college, but you will also pay the least amount of money.  If you go to a four-year state college, you will pay more, but you will also get a more advanced degree.  In any case, you will need to get licensed or otherwise have some certification.

Looking at School Rankings
If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford tuition from a top nursing school, you can look to a list of nursing schools to help see where these schools rank according to national criteria.  For example, you will find that John Hopkins University is ranked in the top three of nursing schools for graduate courses along with the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Washington.

Even if you decide to look at a list of top schools, you should still look at the schools’ specialties to decide whether it is the right kind of school for you.  A school that ranks highly for those who want to be a clinical nurse specialist may not rank as highly in other areas such as nursing service administration.  You want to do careful research to find just what you need in a nursing school.
