Nursing Cover Letters: The Basics Part 1

in Preparing to Become a Nurse

I talked about the importance of a cover letter and resume a few posts ago. While in graduate school, I worked as an advisor in helping other students prepare their cover letters, resumes, and go over interview skills. Having a solid cover letter is just one basic step in selling yourself to the organization that you want to hire you. Here is the first part you want to make sure and include in your cover letter:

Give an introduction as to why you are writing. You need to tell the organization how you heard of the position and where you are at now within your nursing career (i.e. about to graduate, relocating to the area, moving into more specialized care). If you got the nurse position information from the paper on from online, then mention this; however, if you can mention that you already talked to a specific person who works there, then that is even better!

Here are a couple of examples:

“I was excited to read from the Washington Post that the Johnson Medical Center is looking for a surgical intensive care nurse. I will receive my BSN from Chase Eastern University in May and so am eager to be considered for the position.”

“Dr. John James recently informed me of the current opening for surgical intensive care nurse at Johnson Medical Center. I am relocating to that area and am eager to be considered for the position.”

If you can give an actual name reference it will help because it shows that you have a connection. Also, when you address the hospital, stay away from To Whom it May Concern. You need to try and find the name of a person to address. This makes you look informed about the medical center in which you are applying to.

In my upcoming posts, I will give some more information about what should go into the body part of your cover letter….a little behind here myself I guess! Stay tuned.
