Healthcare employment will be one of the true bright spots when it comes to career choices for the next several decades, according to just about any expert or authority you ask. The job opportunities in this field are increasing every day, and the rate of increase is getting faster all the time. Job opportunities for doctors, nurses, x-ray techs, medical assistants, certified nursing assistants, attendants, medical office managers, medical coding and billing, etc., will be wide open. There are few, if any, career choices that can offer the employment choices and good salaries that healthcare professionals will enjoy for the foreseeable future.
Why is healthcare employment going to be such a hot job market for the next ten to twenty years? It’s very simple. Two words explain everything you need to know – demographic changes. If that does not clear it up, try two more words – baby boomers. I’m sure you are aware that between 1946 and 1964 America saw the biggest wave of births it has ever seen, before or since. That generation changed America in a lot of ways, but the biggest change is yet to come. It is what sociologists call the graying of America. In other words, the baby boomers are now moving into their senior citizen years. And the healthcare industry is not even close to being prepared for this massive age wave.
As tens of millions of these baby boomers retire and grow old, their health will naturally begin to decline. Older Americans have always been the biggest users of healthcare, and now there will be millions and millions more people in that category. Experts are worried that that we will not make the proper adjustments, and that millions of people will go without adequate care.
But that is good news for anyone looking for a career where they can help people and will not have to worry about layoffs and outsourcing. Healthcare employment is one of the few fields where the jobs cannot me exported to India or China. It is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a steady career.
